Leo
Leo, a 7-year-old neutered male Golden Retriever, had a history of chronic skin issues and had been started on Cyclosporine a few months ago, along with a tapered dose of Apoquel for itch relief.
Leo was doing very well until 2–3 months later, when he suddenly developed hyperpigmentation in the axilla and chest area, and the affected skin appeared very sticky.
Diagnostic findings:
- Tape smear cytology from the axilla and chest
- 4+ yeast along with 2-3+ cocci detected
These findings indicated a secondary yeast and bacterial infection.
Treatment plan initiated:
- Continued Cyclosporine and Apoquel as previously prescribed
- Oral antibiotics and antifungals
- Topical anti-inflammatory mixed with an antifungal for affected areas
- Continued medicated shampoo and ongoing diet trial
After 3 weeks, Leo showed remarkable improvement.
The pigmented patches had completely resolved, and repeat cytology confirmed that the yeast and cocci had disappeared.
We’re so happy to see Leo doing so well! 🐾
